Christian's Magic Kit

We won a book basket at one of Christian's school programs that included a $25 gift certificate to a book dealer. He was super excited about a magic kit that was in there, so we ordered it a couple days before his birthday party. He hadn't mentioned anything about a magic kit before then, so we didn't know to buy him anything for his birthday. He opened his presents and asked me after where his magic kit was. I explained to him that I ordered it, but that it had to be shipped to us. The worst part was that it was a gift certificate through an independent seller, so I had to send this person a check, then she had to order the books, then we had to wait to have them shipped. He's been waiting for this kit for a minute. It finally came last week, when he was at his dad's. I picked them up last night and Cade immediately says, "Is Rhys here?" and Christian says, "Why won't my magic kit come?" I told Christian that it did come and he's bouncing in the back seat all the way back to the house, which was a lengthy trip last night.

SIDEBAR: they've closed the road that I use to take the quick way to and from Travis's to our house, and I forgot last night. So I took the way I usually do, then realized that I couldn't go left, so I went right and figured I'd just jog up and go left on the next road. So I turn left only to get another road closed sign. Finally, we made it home after 23 minutes, which should have been a 5 minute trip.

Anyway, as soon as we got home, he opened his magic kit, grabbed the wand, gave Cade a hankerchief, and started running around the house yelling, "Abracadabra Alacazam!" This went on for about 5 minutes while I was starting dinner. Then he comes in and says, "Mom, this wand's broke! It doesn't even do magic!" I tried to explain to him that it's called a magic trick, because you have to trick people into thinking it's magic when it really isn't. He said, "But I can't even get a rabbit out of a hat now!" I spent the better part of the evening trying to explain that magic doesn't really work like that and showing him tricks from the book that he was less than impressed with.

Stupid Harry Potter and his wand! LOL Making kids think that magic is just the wave of a wand and a few words.
